Here's John Boyega piloting in an epic Jaeger-on-Jaeger battle from 'Pacific Rim Uprising' (exclusive)

John Boyega is ready to kick some major monster behind when Pacific Rim Uprising stomps into theaters this month. The sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 slugfest — about an Earthly infestation of giant alien beasts called Kaiju that humanity combats with towering two-manned robot fighters known as Jaegers — the upcoming film will feature Boyega as Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba’s inspiring military commander, and is being helmed by Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix’s Daredevil) in his feature directorial debut. From all early appearances, it’s going to be a titanic CGI spectacular, and that impression is only amplified by our exclusive clip from the film, which shows the Star Wars star and his partner-in-heroism in action.

In the above scene, Boyega’s Pentecost and copilot Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood) guide their Jaeger, Gipsy Avenger, in a battle against the rogue robot Obsidian Fury, which has the same sorts of bladed weapons as their own. Using choreographed moves to control their robot, the two employ some creative maneuvers (including an old-school favorite) to take down their adversary — or at least to wound him, since the clip doesn’t reveal the outcome of this tussle. But considering these two are our heroes, we can assume they don’t perish at the hands of this villain, who for reasons unknown has joined the side of the Kaiju.

While the answers to such narrative mysteries aren’t answered here, they’ll surely be resolved in Pacific Rim Uprising, which co-stars Cailee Spaeny, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, and Rinko Kikuchi.

Pacific Rim Uprising premieres on March 23.
