Harvey Weinstein is being moved to the Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill, N.Y., one day ahead of his 68th birthday. It's is a multi-security level prison in New York, about an hour north of Manhattan.
The former movie mogul, who was sentenced to 23 years for rape and sexual assault, will be assigned to a prison within a few days. A spokesperson for Weinstein told Yahoo Entertainment Wednesday they are hoping he'll "be assigned to one of the four medical facilities in the area."
Weinstein has been between the medical unit at Rikers Island jail and New York's Bellevue Hospital ever since his Feb. 24 conviction. After sentencing last week, he was transferred to Bellevue for chest pains. Earlier this month, he had a heart procedure to remove a blockage.
It's unclear how long it will take before Weinstein is assigned a prison. Prosecutors in Los Angeles have begun the extradition process as he has been charged with sex crimes in California. However, court officials announced this week nearly all trials in Los Angeles County will be on hold for at least a month due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Weinstein will not be getting any visitors while at Fishkill. The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision announced over the weekend all visitation to state-run correctional facilities will be suspended until April 11.
"The department’s greatest concern is the safety and well-being of our employees and individuals within our care, custody, and supervision, particularly during this developing public health emergency," the DOCCS said in a statement. "To that end, the Department must swiftly impose restrictions and precautions to prevent additional spread of infectious viral transmission of COVID-19 in both correctional facilities and the community writ large."
Officials said inmates will be given more opportunities to correspond with family members and loved ones over the phone and online. Weinstein's ex-wife, Georgina Chapman, likely won't be waiting by the phone. A source told People she’s "devastated" by the scandal. However, Weinstein's top attorney, Donna Rotunno, said he has a "great relationship" with the two children they share, India, 9, and Dashiell, 6.
"The thought of his two young children who rely on him on a daily basis. This is not a joke... this is real life," she told the Daily Mail.
"His oldest daughters don't speak to him. So I mean it's horrific. The ripple effect of someone losing their freedom is beyond what any of us could comprehend," she continued. Weinstein has three older daughters from his previous 20-year marriage to Eve Chilton: Lily, 25, Emma, 22, and Ruth, 17.
"He's been seeing the younger kids their whole lives. They live next door to each other, he has a great relationship with his younger children," Rotunno added.
