VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — To bring many together as one — that’s the goal of the Greek Unity Step Show and Activity Hour taking place at the 17th St. stage at the Oceanfront Friday.

Part of Audacy’s Oceanfront Concerts series, the event includes a competition for the best step team, live DJs and a raffle.

Step teams will compete for a $500 cash prize. The organizers say they’ll be judging based on precision, energy, crowd reaction and song choice.

Tickets are not required to watch the event, though they do enter attendees in a drawing for a chance to see the headlining performances of the week: NLE Choppa and Juicy J (on Friday and Saturday night, respectively). Event tickets and team registration are available at Kelo.info/events.

The step show will run from 2 p.m. until 5 pm. Myriad DJs and performers with ties to local universities or Greek letter organizations will hold down the music. Those include DJ Pye, Izzy the DJ, DJ Juanski, Nie, Zyaa, Riq Fisher and JustKues.

The event seeks to highlight “the vibrant tradition and unity among regional universities and cultural organizations, including the Divine 9 and HBCUs,” according to a release.

The artist Kelo, who’s hosting the competition, said the motivation behind it was to celebrate the rich culture of Hampton Roads, and especially minority communities.

“We hope Virginia Beach is ready to accept us with open arms,” he said.

The Oceanfront Concert Series is helping to fill the void in events and entertainment left during the traditional college beach week after Something in the Water changed dates.

“This is an empowering moment to be on the main stage when you consider the history of Virginia Beach and Greeks and assess some of the narratives current business owners have,” the release reads.
