The sudden breakup of The Golden Bachelor couple Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist continues to send shockwaves through the reality show community. Bachelor Nation is stunned by the blink-and-you-miss-it, three-month marriage that was televised for fans to witness their fairytale ending, but it sounds like things were so rosy behind the scenes.

It appears that Turner and Nist’s struggles began on Nov. 29 ahead of The Golden Bachelor finale the next day. The Hollywood Reporter did a deep dive into Turner’s past, and it felt like either he or ABC or a combination of both had told a few lies about his background. The “retired restaurateur” image sounds quite elite, but his work history proved that he owned a Mr. Quick fast-food franchise which hadn’t been a part of his life since 1985. He even kept working in his post-retirement era with construction and maintenance jobs.

On the flip side, Nist was happily established in the financial services industry, and she loved her job so much that she didn’t have any immediate plans to retire. “I guess the difficult part is, I went on to the show to find my partner, and I’ve been retired for a long time,” Turner said on the Dear Shandy podcast in late March. “I wanted fun, adventure. I wanted to go and do. So that is the crux of it, right now, is – when does that start?”

Plus, Turner’s sweet story that he “hadn’t dated in 45 years” after the death of his first wife, Toni, won the audience over. However, The Hollywood Reporter‘s exposé proved that he had quite an active dating life as a widow. Even though Nist swore to Good Morning America that his dating history “didn’t play into” any issues with them, a source close to the estranged couple claims otherwise. “Making plans with Gerry was so exciting,” a Life & Style insider revealed. “ABC wanted to televise the wedding, and they figured, ‘Why not?’ By the time Theresa found out Gerry had misrepresented his career and romantic past, she was already too far in.”

Nist has remained positive about her experience on The Golden Bachelor, but she did issue a small warning to everyone who is looking to find their forever person. “I truly thought it was going to last forever,” she said in an April 15 Instagram post. “It turns out, even at the age of 70, you don’t know everything.”
