The news that The Golden Bachelor couple, Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist, are divorcing sent shockwaves through Bachelor Nation on Friday, April 12. The reality show duo had walked down the aisle in front of millions on ABC just three short months ago. Now, they have to unravel everything from their short time together.

Their reasons for moving on include their reluctance to relocate and their dedication to their families — it shows that the two widows were at different stages of their lives. Nist, who is reportedly worth between $500,000 to $1 million, is still working in the financial services industry, according to Life & Style, and Turner’s net worth is estimated at $1.5 million as a retired restauranteur. That’s a sizable sum for both of them, but Good Morning America‘s Juju Chang confirmed after the interview that they had a prenuptial agreement and they “highly recommended it to others.”

There are also other things to sort through, including the Neil Lane rings and the Italy honeymoon, which were gifted to them from ABC. Well, Turner and Nist won’t be fighting over them because, according to The Bachelor franchise rules, they all go back to the network. According to former host Chris Harrison, the contestants get to keep the rings if they get married or the engagement lasts for over two years. “After a certain number of years, you get to keep it anyway. But after months … it goes back,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2016. Turner and Nist did everything very quickly — engagement, marriage, and divorce — in mere months, so ABC will likely take it all back and return them to the jeweler.

For anyone who believes that prenuptial agreements are just for the rich and famous, North Carolina family law attorney Theresa Viera told NPR that is a total myth. “We’re not preconceiving that a divorce is going to occur. We’re discussing important financial issues that come up in every marriage,” she explained while noting that the prenup conversation should happen at least six months before the wedding. “I say that because you don’t want the duress of a wedding to influence your decision to enter into a prenup. It should be one of the first discussions after the engagement ring is exchanged.”

Turner and Nist’s assets are protected because they thought ahead of their short walk down the aisle. It’s not the outcome they were hoping for, but the prenuptial agreement will hopefully leave any financial fights out of the equation.
