Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Sequel Parts With Director

The sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is seeking a new director.

Adam Wingard helmed the last two MonsterVerse movies in 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, but he’s not returning to the next installment.

That’s according to an article by The Hollywood Reporter, which writes “The parting of ways is described as amicable and stemming from timing issues. The door remains open for a future return, per insiders.”

That begs the question, what is Wingard up to? During the press tour for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire he teased a new original project called Onslaught. It’s said to be an action thriller, and A24 is currently shaping up to film it in the fall.

Legendary, meanwhile, wants to capitalize on the success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire by following it with a swift sequel. It’s the highest-grossing of the five MonsterVerse movies, with $568 million, as well as the most profitable, since it only cost $135 million.

The previous film, Godzilla vs. Kong, didn’t do quite as well with a $470 million worldwide haul, but then again, it was released during Covid.
