Glen Powell is quickly becoming a household name and he has co-stars who walked the road to fame before him to thank for his level-headed attitude. Having worked with stars like Tom Cruise and Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney in recent years, Powell has picked up a thing or two about staying grounded.

The actor divulged how he is learning to navigate fame in an in-depth interview with The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that he is relocating to his home state, Texas, to find peace amidst a meteoric rise to fame — he also plans to use his time there to reconnect with his family and finally get his college degree.

Powell, who worked with Cruise on box office hit Top Gun: Maverick and with Sweeney on this year’s rom-com success Anyone But You, leaned into advice from the stars when he faced a tsunami of attention ahead of the release of his and Sweeney’s movie. The two found themselves the subject of dating rumors and accusations of infidelity due to their palpable chemistry in on-set photos. Powell admits that he and Sweeney deliberately leaned into the rumors but that only made things more overwhelming.

“I kept coming back to something that Cruise had said, which was, ‘The world’s going to become really loud, and it’s your decision how much you turn up or down the volume,'” Powell told The Hollywood Reporter. At the time, Powell was just coming out of a long-term relationship with model Gigi Paris. Sweeney remains in a relationship with one of the movie’s producers.

“The world did get really loud, but I didn’t know where those dials were. I was like, ‘I know we talked about this, but I don’t know how to work this console.’ Meanwhile, Sydney, through Euphoria, had been on this ride and she was like, ‘This is all good.'”

Elsewhere in the interview, Powell disclosed that he keeps an “icon wisdom” journal, in which he writes down advice given to him from his Hollywood peers. Nobody appears in the journal more that Cruise, who started as his idol, then became a mentor and is now a friend.
