After 14 years at the front of the Nashville Symphony, Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero will celebrate his final season by showcasing the virtuosity and versatility of the orchestra he developed.

The 2024-25 Nashville Symphony season will feature everything from beloved traditional classics to a Pops Series with artists such as The War and Treaty, Guerrero’s Finale featuring Mahler’s "Fifth and Eighth Symphonies" and concerts featuring Lyle Lovett and Dionne Warwick; and a one-night-only performance with Itzhak Perlman.

Guerrero will conduct 8 of the fifteen Classical Series programs including Igor Stravinsky’s "The Firebird," Sergei Rachmaninoff’s "Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra," Ludwig van Beethoven’s "Symphony No. 9," Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s "Symphony No. 5," and Franz Schubert’s “(Unfinished) Symphony No. 8."

“I look back on my tenure with the Nashville Symphony with enormous pride in the artistic heights we have achieved together and how our sound has evolved," Guerrero said in a statement. "The virtuosity of the orchestra will be on display on every concert in the 2024/25 season — with compositions by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Ravel and Stravinsky, bookended by two of Mahler’s monumental symphonies — while our unequaled commitment to American music continues with performances and recordings of works by Mason Bates, Julia Wolfe and Kip Winger."

Musician and composer Kip Winger, second from right, stands with the Nashville Symphony’s Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero, right, after the 2017 performance of Winger’s Grammy-nominated “Conversations With Nijinsky.” The 2024-25 season will be Guerrero's last season with the Nashville Symphony.

The 2024-25 season will feature more than 100 performances encompassing a wide range of styles that span classical, pops, family and holiday genres.

The Classical Series culminates with Guerrero conducting Mahler’s "Symphony No. 8" which will include eight vocal soloists, two mixed choirs and a boys’ choir, an oversized orchestra, and a "multitude of percussion."

The Pops Series with Principal Pops Conductor Enrico Lopez-Yañez will include Pink Martini, The War and Treaty, live-to-film "West Side Story" performances, a symphonic celebration of Genesis and Phil Collins, Lyle Lovett, La Vida Loca, and Indigo Girls.

The Family Series will feature "Día De Los Muertos," "Wild Symphony," "Slopera," and "Peter and the Wolf." Live orchestra-to-film presentations are set to include Tim Burton’s "The Nightmare Before Christmas," "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Home Alone," "The Princess Bride," and "The Lion King."

The season will also feature composers Mark Adamo, Jasmine Barnes, Osvaldo Golijov, Joan Huang, Missy Mazzoli, Carlos Simon, and Mary Lou Williams; Live Recordings of Works by Mason Bates, Julia Wolfe, and C.F. Kip Winger.

"For the past 16 years, I’ve been honored to work alongside Giancarlo, stewarding the Nashville Symphony to new heights," Nashville Symphony CEO Alan D. Valentine said in a release. "Just like the distinguished roster of music directors who preceded him, Giancarlo leaves an indelible mark on the orchestra, our institution, and our community. Giancarlo's selections for this upcoming season perfectly capture his exhilarating and engaging performances, and I'm beyond excited to share these programs with the community."

Guerrero will transition into the role of music director laureate who will lead the orchestra four weeks per year during the following season as the organization transitions into new artistic leadership.

A committee comprised of the board of directors, as well as musician, administrative and volunteer leadership, will be assembled to search for his successor.

“It has been my distinct honor and pleasure to serve as Music Director to our musically omnivorous Nashville audiences for the past fifteen years and I am excited to share with them this unforgettable season of music.”
