Gaffes and grimaces: Megyn Kelly’s first week on 'Today'

Week one of Megyn Kelly’s very own hour of the Today show is in the books, and naturally there were some first-week gaffes. So, naturally, we want to take a look back at those.

On the very first episode of Megyn Kelly Today, Kelly welcomed the cast of Will & Grace. During the interview, Kelly brought up a Will & Grace superfan, and she drew nationwide criticism for two failed attempts at humor.

“Is it true that you became a lawyer, and became gay, because of Will?” Kelly asked the man. Then, after giving him an all-expense-paid trip to the Will & Grace set, she said, “I don’t know about the lawyer thing, but I think the Will & Grace thing and the gay thing are gonna go great.”

Will & Grace star Debra Messing later said she regretted doing the interview.

Kelly’s hour of Today is meant to have a daytime-talk-show vibe, which means there’s an audience. Kelly does a brief Q&A segment in which she takes questions from pre-selected audience members; in one instance, she called on the wrong person. Or she called on the right person and called them by the wrong name. Either way, it made for a spectacularly awkward moment.

Not every gaffe was Kelly’s fault. In another Q&A segment, the man asking questions referred to her as “Kelly” instead of Megyn — multiple times.

And then there was the much-publicized interview with Jane Fonda and Robert Redford. Kelly thought it would be a good idea to bring up Fonda’s plastic surgery. Fonda handled it like a pro, but her face said it all.
