Return to Silent Hill, the first new Silent Hill movie in well over a decade, has been kept under wraps largely since its announcement, but now we’ve finally got our first look at it, and it’s everything you’d expect.

Variety has revealed a first-look image of Return to Silent Hill, showing off the series’ de facto mascot, Pyramid Head. The image shows the classic Pyramid Head fans of the series know and love, with scarred arms and hands, a big serrated blade, and the signature pyramid-shaped face covering that extends from well above his head down to his waist.

It’s a suitably terrifying image, and looks to be quite a faithful representation of the classic video game villain. For those concerned that the film is leaning a bit too hard on the series’ one well-known villain, you shouldn’t stress too much — Return to Silent Hill is effectively an adaptation of the villain’s originating game, Silent Hill 2, so this is the one place you actually want to see Pyramid Head.

Silent Hill 2 is one of the best horror games of all time, the second in a long series that has had as many high points as it has low. The game follows a man named James Sunderland who visits a small town called Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his late wife. In the town, he faces horrors and terrors of a supernatural nature, all the while coming face to face with his own internal struggles and traumas.

It’s a very good game, and it’s well-respected and well-loved by fans, so the film has a lot of big expectations to live up to. That’s something the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake has to contend with, too, so at least Return to Silent Hill isn’t roughing it alone.

The film is part of a greater rebirth of the Silent Hill franchise, which has been dormant for quite some time. There are a number of games and other media projects announced, with one even having been released — unfortunately, as you’ll see in our Silent Hill: The Short Message review, it isn’t very good.

Return to Silent Hill is set to be released at some point in 2024, although an exact release date has not been announced.
