How will ‘Feud: Capote vs. The Swans’ fare at 2024 Emmys? A look back at ‘Bette and Joan’

After a seven-year break, FX’s anthology series “Feud” is back with another installment of rivalry and gossip titled “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” telling the story of Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) and a high society New York City socialite group known as The Swans, which includes Babe Paley (Naomi Watts), Slim Keith (Diane Lane), C.Z. Guest (Chloë Sevigny), Lee Radziwill (Calista Flockhart), Ann Woodward (Demi Moore) and Joanne Carson (Molly Ringwald). The previous season of the Ryan Murphy docudrama that starred Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis nabbed 18 Emmy Award nominations and two wins. SEEEmmy spotlight: Naomi Watts (‘Feud: Capote vs. The Swans’) dazzles as heartbreakingly ‘brittle’ Babe Paley

The last season was also cited for Best Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series for “Feud Bette and Joan: Inside Look,” though separate from the actual series. What is clear from the last cycle is that the branches from the visual crafts and the actors really responded to the show, which is expected for a Ryan Murphy period piece. Therefore, it should not be surprising if “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” secures bids in categories like makeup, costumes, hairstyling, production design or main title design, with a shot in music composition given the composer is Julia Newman, daughter of legendary Emmy winner Thomas Newman. Despite the high tally for “Feud: Bette and Joan” in technical support, it did not receive key editing or cinematography nominations, something that maybe this season could rectify.

The acting categories are more tricky as this is a much larger ensemble of celebrated actors than the last installment in terms of quantity, with a main cast that also includes Joe Mantello, Russell Tovey and the late Treat Williams. Where things get interesting is the myriad of limited series contenders this year that the show will have to compete across all these main categories, which could complicate some paths towards a nomination. But according to the combined Gold Derby odds, Hollander (2nd with 5/1 odds), Lane (4th with 7/1 odds), Sevigny (6th with 13/1 odds) and Williams (7th with 13/1 odds) are currently predicted to get into their respective categories as of this writing, with Watts just outside on the edge in Best Limited/Movie Actress (7th with 13/1 odds).

All of these potential nominations could prove vital for Best Limited/Anthology Series, where it currently places ninth with 48/1 odds and only 186 predicting its selection due to the crowded field. However, if this second season does well in other categories, including key writing, directing and casting mentions (particularly the last one with its huge ensemble and high correlation to the top program category), we could be looking at a similar Emmy nomination count in comparison to the first installment.
