FX’s “Fargo” is back in the running again after three years with its fifth season by creator Noah Hawley that will compete at the 2024 Emmy Awards. This latest installment that premiered late September returns to the current decade – having alternated between modern and period time frames in the Midwest – taking place in 2019 in Minnesota and North Dakota. It stars Juno Temple, Jon Hamm and Jennifer Jason Leigh and tells the story of a housewife who has to come to terms with her past as she is being hunted down. Past seasons of “Fargo” have done exceedingly well at the Emmy Awards, nabbing a total of 55 nominations and six wins, including a Best Limited Series victory for its debut. Let’s examine past categories and races it has competed in the last four seasons to determine potential nominations for the current outing.

The only three crafts that the anthology series has received a bid for every season are cinematography, music composition and sound editing, which were its only citations for the recent fourth season, its weakest awards performance. However, the preceding three all achieved impressive double-digit tallies during their eligibility, with the first and second season getting 18 nominations and the third with 16, which included recognition for all the main races including writing, directing, an average of three to four actors in their respective categories, and Best Limited Series.

When you look at the other technical categories, an interesting observation is that “Fargo” nabbed multiple slots for picture editing in its first three seasons, getting up to three for its first and third, which could be a sign for this well-received fifth cycle. In addition, it secured casting, non-prosthetic makeup and sound mixing noms for each anthology within that three-season timeframe, as well as two hairstyling bids for the last two, and a solo production design nomination for the sophomore bump.

So what does it spell out for its fifth try at Emmy gold? Having premiered back in the fall, the season has been praised as a return to form to its first two installments and has done solid at the winter awards, getting recognition at the Producers Guild of America, Writers Guild of America, Screen Actors Guild and Art Directors Guild Awards, along with three Golden Globe and two Critics’ Choice Award nominations. Temple and Hamm have each been acknowledged at two different award shows and are currently predicted to get into their respective lead categories at the Emmys, with Hamm forecasted to win Best Limited/Movie Actor and his second Emmy after “Mad Men,” according to the combined Gold Derby odds, with 9/2 and 990 users going to bat for him. As for Temple, she is currently in third for Best Limited/Movie Actress with 5/1 odds and 87 users thinking she will triumph.

With the supporting categories, Leigh is also speculated to win what would be her first Emmy nomination in Best Limited/Movie Supporting Actress with 6/1 odds and 1,002 users backing her. And if “Fargo” does well, we could see additional members of the cast in these supporting races, such as Joe Keery (presently in 5th with 10/1 odds), Sam Spruell, Lamorne Morris and Richa Moorjani.

For writing, Hawley has solely penned every episode of the season except three, in which he co-wrote with different writers, leaving the option for them to submit individual episodes for consideration. The same goes with directing where Hawley was one of five directors behind the camera this season. As for the below-the-line races, we should see a resurgence for many of the technical categories “Fargo” has received for their past anthologies, which could skyrocket the show back to its comfortable place in the teens for total nominations.

Finally with Best Limited Series, despite the crowded field this year, it looks like the show is safe for a nomination in the top category, given its Emmys history and precursor run, currently in second with 9/2 odds and 675 users predicting a second win bookending the first. It seems that “Fargo” has generated enough goodwill to maintain its place this Emmy season and it will be exciting to see if it can rebound and get back on its feet.
