The Fall Guy — Movie Review

In what may be the starting gun for the summer 2024 movie season, The Fall Guy represents the first popcorn blockbuster of the year. Hopefully, it’s a sign of things to come because the Ryan Gosling-led action comedy jaunt is a delightful time at the movies.

Gosling plays Colt Seavers, a movie stuntman who, after an unfortunate on-set incident, finds himself separated from the filmmaking industry and the love of his life, camera operator Jody Moreno, played by Emily Blunt. However, after over a year away from the game, Seavers returns to the scene, and Moreno is in the thick of a twisted and sometimes comically confusing plot.

The Fall Guy is director David Leitch’s tribute to the stunt work industry and film in general, and it shows. The action is crisp, the visuals appealing, and the dialogue snappy. The film feels like a spiritual successor to 2008’s satirical action-comedy ‘Tropic Thunder,’ complete with a stellar ensemble cast.

With a fantastically obnoxious turn from Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the always charming Hannah Waddingham, and a reliable, solid performance from Winston Duke supporting Gosling and Blunt in their roles, The Fall Guy’s likability is embedded in its cast. Gosling brings an effortless charm and comedic timing, as has been his modus operandi for most of his career. Blunt, not satisfied with second fiddle, grounds the film to some sort of reality when it threatens to lift off into the silliness stratosphere.

While not a film that demands deep philosophical thought, The Fall Guy is a rollercoaster ride of quick, occasionally dumb, but mostly hilarious moments wrapped in an action-packed love letter to cinema and the people who help tell the stories we see on-screen from behind the camera. The Fall Guy is a summer blockbuster worth leaving the house for.
