In 1978, Fred Zinnemann became the third of four filmmakers to direct six or more Oscar-winning performances, following William Wyler and Elia Kazan and preceding Woody Allen. Along with Wyler, Kazan, Martin Scorsese, and George Cukor, he remains one of only five directors responsible for at least 20 acting notices, with no fewer than four examples in each possible category (although none of his lead actresses managed to prevail). Check out our complete photo gallery of Oscar-winning turns in Zinnemann films, which also includes a rundown of the unsuccessful nominees directed by him.

Between 1936 and 1982, Zinnemann directed 22 narrative feature films, 14 of which earned a collective total of 66 Oscar nominations and 24 wins. Prior to his death in 1997, he was personally recognized 10 times across three categories, winning Best Documentary Short for “Benjy” (1952), Best Director for “From Here to Eternity” (1954), and Best Picture and Director for “A Man for All Seasons” (1967).
