Emmy Experts predict Jeremy Allen White (‘The Bear’) will win Best Comedy Actor

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Comedy Actor at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”). The other potential nominees at this early stage are Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”), Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”), Larry David (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Kelsey Grammer (“Frasier”) — but that could all change in the coming months.

As of this writing, nine out of our 10 Emmy Experts predict a victory for White for Season 2 of “The Bear”: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox), Susan King (Gold Derby) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby). He plays Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, the new owner of a Chicago beef restaurant following the death of his brother. Amazingly, White has yet to lose at any televised awards show for FX’s cooking dramedy, having triumphed at the Emmys, Golden Globes, Critics Choice and SAG Awards.

The remaining Emmyologist — Jazz Tangcay (Variety) — instead believes Short will prevail for Season 3 of “Only Murders in the Building.” His character of theater director-turned-amateur sleuth Oliver Putnam engaged in a romantic relationship this year with Meryl Streep‘s theater actress Loretta Durkin, allowing viewers to see him in a new light. Short is already a two-time Emmy winner for “SCTV Network” (writing, 1983) and “AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Mel Brooks” (hosting, 2014).

Also looking strong in our Experts’ rankings is Martin for Hulu’s whodunnit series. He plays Charles-Haden Savage on “Only Murders,” a former TV actor who’s now splitting his time between starring on a Broadway play and solving a murder. Martin won an Emmy Award for “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” (writing, 1969), but, much like Short, he’s never prevailed for his acting.

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Comedy Actor category include White, Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”), Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”), Bill Hader (“Barry”) and Donald Glover (“Atlanta”).
