Emmy Experts predict Billy Crudup (‘The Morning Show’) will win Best Drama Supporting Actor

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Drama Supporting Actor at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”). The other potential nominees at this early stage are Khalid Abdalla (“The Crown”), Jack Lowden (“Slow Horses”), Jon Hamm (“The Morning Show”), Jonathan Pryce (“The Crown”), Nathan Lane (“The Gilded Age”), Ke Huy Quan (“Loki”) and Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”) — but that could all change in the coming months.

As of this writing, seven out of our nine Emmy Experts predict a victory for Crudup: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby). In Season 3 of the Apple TV+ drama, his CEO character Cory Ellison was involved in trying to get a tech billionaire (Hamm) to buy the fictional network UBA, with disastrous results. Crudup already won an Emmy for “The Morning Show” in 2020, so now he’s looking for a bookend trophy.

One of our Emmyologists — Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox) — instead believes Abdalla will prevail for Season 6 of Netflix’s “The Crown.” He’s coming off nominations at the Critics Choice Awards (supporting actor) and SAG Awards (ensemble) for playing Dodi Fayed, who was romantically linked with Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) when they both tragically died in a car accident.

Finally, Peter Travers (ABC) goes out on a limb in forecasting a victory for Lowden. He plays River Cartwright on “Slow Horses” Season 3, a young MI5 agent who works with the devious Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman). Lowden has two BAFTA TV Award nominations to his name for the Apple TV+ spy thriller, but this would be his first career Emmy bid.
