Elliot Page wants to bring you more gays in space.

The actor’s production company, PAGEBOY Productions, has acquired the film rights to author Eliot Schrefer’s acclaimed queer young adult sci-fi novel The Darkness Outside Us. The book follows Ambrose and Kodiak, two boys from enemy countries who are forced to team up on a space rescue mission. As the two navigate their spaceship’s secrets, the synopsis hints that “love might be the only way to survive.” Gay enemies to lovers in space? I’m already seated.

“We are proud to stand behind Eliot’s remarkable work. The Darkness Outside Us is exactly the type of story we want to champion at PAGEBOY — it’s subversive and deeply human at its core,” Page said in a joint statement with PAGEBOY’s Head of Development and Production Matt Jordan Smith and Director of Development Tuck Dowrey, per the Hollywood Reporter.

“[The novel is] a complex love story, innovative thriller, and a space epic with twists at every turn,” their statement continues. “We cannot wait to take the next steps towards getting it on the big screen.”

The letter is a response to provincial policies that target trans youth.

The Darkness Outside Us won the Stonewall Honor Award in 2022. A sequel, titled The Brightness Between Us, comes out on October 1.

“What could I hope for most for my novel? An agile, young, motivated production company that’s buzzy in Hollywood — and that’s just what I got with PAGEBOY Productions,” Schrefer said in a statement of his own. “I’m so excited by their vision for The Darkness Outside Us and honored to have the talents of Elliot and Matt and Tuck and the rest of the team devoted to it.”

PAGEBOY Productions previously developed nonbinary filmmaker D.W. Waterson’s sapphic cheerleader film Backspot and Dominic Savage’s upcoming drama film Close to You, which stars Page as a trans man who embarks on a trip back to his hometown for a family reunion.

In a September interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor described Close To You, which marks his first big screen role in six years, as “a complete highlight of my career.”

“I just felt exhilarated every day,” Page said. “What a special film to do, first time [back on film], because it lets you feel embodied to the extreme.”
