Garvey gets into how the band developed a beat-driven mindset for the record, which eventually led them to reinvent how they approached recording. Once in the studio, bands like Talk Talk, R.E.M., and The Beatles served as sources of inspiration. Zoning in on the influence of the Fab Four in particular, the singer explains how Elbow looked towards the iconic act’s process, not just their music.
“I watched a documentary on The Beatles from The BBC,” he recalls. “There was an interview with an engineer from The White Album who said, ‘When any three Beatles,’ and it didn’t matter which three, ‘were in the room, the work ethic was as ferocious as it had always been, but when all four were there, they were joined by the spirit of lethargy.’ And it resonated with me.”
It wasn’t just other musicians that influenced Garvey’s creative approach, however. As he explains, the artist witnessed a knife fight in Istanbul, an event which altered how he viewed communicating with others. Ultimately, it forced him to reflect upon his own traits and how he might have had an incorrect view of himself and his conception of strangers.
