Dwayne Johnson and Lin Manuel-Miranda Crush It in Alamo Drafthouse No-Phone PSA

It seems not a day goes by without Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson posting on social media, whether he’s sharing videos from a movie set, photos from the gym, or updates about his self-branded apps. With the debut of his latest film, Disney’s animated Moana, fast approaching, he’s going into overdrive with promotional efforts, including one where he insists you NOT look at all those tweets, Instagrams, or anything else that’s on your phone — at least for as long as you’re in a movie theater.

Johnson teamed up with one of the men responsible for Moana’s musical numbers — Hamilton mastermind Lin Manuel-Miranda — for a new PSA (watch it above) that forcefully, if cheerfully, reminds us all to respect fellow moviegoers and follow basic theater etiquette. The clip is the latest in a series for Alamo Drafthouse theaters, which are famous for their strict no-phone policies. After one warning from management, any attendee at an Alamo Drafthouse who continues to chat or text during a movie gets ejected from the theater. That rule has long been publicized via pre-show public service announcements such as the one above, in which Johnson makes it clear he’ll crush any smartphone that’s powered on once the lights go out — and that includes Miranda’s.

While Moana may primarily appeal to audience members too young to own an iPhone (we hope), Johnson and Miranda’s advice is nonetheless something best drilled into the heads of moviegoers of all ages. You can check out their PSA above, and catch their Disney collaboration when it sails into theaters on Nov. 23. Check out some of Alamo Drafthouse’s other choice PSAs below.
