‘Dune,’ ‘Rebel Moon,’ and Sydney Sweeney Made Home Viewing Success a Package Deal

With two major sci-fi sequels debuting this week to lead the VOD and Netflix charts, the new films also inspired victory laps for the Part Ones of “Dune” and “Rebel Moon.”

“Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) leads at both iTunes and Fandango, and Netflix’s original “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver” is #1 at the streamer. iTunes packaged the 2021 “Dune: Part One” with its sequel as a $34.99 purchase, and it ranks second there. (“Dune: Part Two” alone rents for 48 hours for $24.99.) “Rebel Moon — Part One” returned at #7 on Netflix’s top 10.

Three other recent theatrical releases also transitioned to home viewing, with curiously different pricing and availability strategies. The top grosser is Neon’s “Immaculate” (approaching $16 million), but it rents for the lowest price: $9.99. “Late Night with the Devil” (IFC) is $14.99, but for that price consumers own it. “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” (Goldwyn) with Liam Neeson is a standard $19.99 rental.

“Immaculate” edged out “Devil” at both sites, best showing fifth at Fandango. With its higher price, “Devil” has an advantage on the revenue-calculating Fandango; it’s #3 there, but didn’t make iTunes top 10. These performances come the same week that Universal released horror title “Abigail” to disappointing results, suggesting that while the theatrical field may be glutted, home viewers still have great interest.

“Anyone but You” continues its impressive showing. Now at $5.99, it is still #3 at iTunes and ahead of the second week of “Kung Fu Panda 4.” That was #1 last week. It transitions to Netflix April 23, where it is likely to debut at #1.

Also debuting this week is Woody Allen’s low-level domestic theatrical release “Coup de Chance.” It didn’t even make iTunes top 30, even with a $6.99 rental price.

Zack Snyder’s two-part “Rebel Moon” has a reported total production cost of $166 million. Opening at #1 is less important than how long it remains in the Netflix top 10. The additional presence of “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire” is a good sign; its older originals rarely reappear.

Two other recent originals, one a British true crime documentary (“What Jennifer Did,” last week’s #1), the other animated (“Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp”) are third and fourth. They are bracketed by two typical Netflix successes coming from little-seen earlier theatrical releases. Luc Besson’s thriller “Anna,” with a cast including Helen Mirren and Cillian Murphy, is #2, while “Rust Creek,” a backwoods crime thriller originally released by IFC Midnight, is #5.

VOD Top 10s

iTunes and Google Play rank films daily by number of transactions, while Fandango at Home lists by revenue. The listings below are for Monday, April 22. Google Play’s top 10 has not been updated, now for over a month. We will list them if and when they return.
