'Disney's The Little Mermaid' opens April 26 at South Bend Civic Theatre

SOUTH BEND — “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” opens April 26 and continues through May 12 at South Bend CivicTheatre, 403 N. Main St.

With music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a book by Doug Wright, the musical is based on Disney’s 1989 animated film and the Hans Christian Andersen story.

The tale revolves around Ariel, a young mermaid who dreams of exploring the human world and falling in love.

With the help of her friends, including the charming and hilarious Flounder and the wise-cracking seagull Scuttle, Ariel embarks on a journey to make her dreams come true.

But can she win the prince, regain her voice and defeat the villainous sea witch Ursula?

Katrine Eskildsen delivers the pre-show lecture “Celebrating the Life and Stories of Hans Christian Andersen” at 1 p.m. April 28 and May 5 and 12; free for ticket-holding patrons.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. April 26-27 and May 3-4 and 9-11 and at 2 p.m. April 28 and May 5 and 12.

Tickets are $35-$27.
