‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Has Already Set Box Office Record Two Months Before Release

Deadpool & Wolverine has already set a box office record more than two months before its July 25 release.

On Wednesday morning, AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron posted a celebratory announcement to X (formerly Twitter) informing fans that the hotly anticipated sequel has sold more advance tickets than any other R-rated movie in the chain’s history.

“Many big movies will open in May, June, and July,” Aron said, “including Deadpool & Wolverine starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Opens July 25. Some 200,000 movie fans have bought their AMC tickets already,” he informed. “This is more Day One ticket sales at AMC than for any other R-rated movie ever.”

Though Aron didn’t provide specific grosses to date, insiders informed The Hollywood Reporter that Deadpool & Wolverine has accumulated between $8–9 million through AMC ticket sales alone.

Shawn Levy’s sequel, which unites Deadpool (Reynolds) and Wolverine (Jackman) as they venture through Marvel’s many multiverses, is tracking to become one of the top-grossing R-rated releases of the year. Insiders say it could top $100 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, making it the first film of 2024 to do so. Both Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018) were amongst the top-grossing R-rated pictures of their respective years.

The film’s R-rating has been generating much news and even a bit of controversy. It’s the first R-rated MCU entry, and a rare restricted title from Disney. Earlier this week, Reynolds admitted in a video interview with Fandango that he was “surprised” the mega-studio allowed them to make such an expensive R-rated feature.

“I hope it doesn’t sound condescending, [but] I’m really proud of them for doing this. I think it’s a huge step for them,” Reynolds said. “I mean, it adds a whole other color to this kaleidoscopic wheel that is that company and the different people that they have been entertaining forever.”

Though the trailers make it obvious the film is rated R, the official rating descriptor for Deadpool & Wolverine hasn’t been released yet. Fans can probably expect to experience more “strong violence and language throughout,” which is what earned the previous installments their R ratings.

Deadpool & Wolverine begins preview screenings on July 25, with a full release following on July 26.
