'Deadliest Catch' deckhand injured in scary fall from stack of pots

On Deadliest Catch, the crew of the Saga got battered by the stormy seas. They were already down a crewman, and things looked bleak, especially after some loose 800-pound crab pots smashed into the workers on deck.

But nobody on the boat had it quite as bad as the new deckhand, Luce. He was charged with stacking and tying crab pots while the boat rolled in giant waves.

While stacking pots in the darkness of night, Luce fell between a row of them. He fell backwards about 15 feet, landing on his side and his head.

As the crew tended to the deckhand, he started developing a headache, dizziness, and began vomiting. The captain, Jake Anderson, wasn’t sure how to handle what appeared to be a concussion. Anderson had to decide between picking up the last 60 pots and going to port to get Luce medical treatment.

The episode ended with the skipper saying, “I’ve seen people get knocked out on the boat’s pots and they were fine, but it’s different when I’m down there, and I’m up here. It’s my responsibility, and I have to live with the guilt every day. F*** it — I’m going in.”

Deadliest Catch regularly airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Discovery.
