“Dead Boy Detectives” is TV’s latest Neil Gaiman adaptation and an expansion of the “Sandman” universe. On Wednesday, Netflix released a trailer for the YA-mystery-fantasy-horror-comedy genre mashup series.

The trailer, which is set to a custom version of My Chemical Romance’s “Welcome to the Black Parade,” gives a preview of the series’ darkly whimsical tone, in the vein of “The Sandman” or “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”

Based on a comic series by acclaimed fantasy writer Gaiman and produced by co-showrunners Steve Yockey (“The Flight Attendant”) and Beth Schwartz (“Sweet Tooth”) and superproducers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schecter, “Dead Boy Detectives” follows a pair of paranormal detectives, Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), who are best friends and ghosts, as they solve paranormal mysteries in the mortal world.

The cast also includes Kassius Nelson as Crystal Palace, a clairvoyant, and Yuyu Kitamura as her friend Niko, who helps the Dead Boy Detectives with their cases; plus Briana Cuoco as Jenny the Butcher, Ruth Connell as the Night Nurse, Lukas Gage as Thomas the Cat King, and Kirby as Death, reprising her role from “The Sandman.”

The pilot episode is directed by Lee Toland Krieger (“You,” “Shadow and Bone”).

The series was originally set up at then-HBO Max before moving to Netflix, where it joins Neil Gaiman adaptations “The Sandman” and “Lucifer.” Other Gaiman adaptations over the years have included Starz’s “American Gods,” Prime Video’s “Good Omens,” and Prime Video’s upcoming “Anansi Boys.”

“Dead Boy Detectives” premieres Thursday, April 25 on Netflix.
