The Young and the Restless‘ Sharon made sure Cameron Kirsten, played by Linden Ashby, was never going to hurt anyone again. However, Daytime Emmy voters made sure that Ashby’s work on the show wasn’t going to go unacknowledged. The actor is chatting with Soap Hub about his nomination for Guest Performer in a Drama Series.

Bad Guys Finish First

“I didn’t know when the nominations were going to be,” Ashby tells Soap Hub. “I was out surfing [the day they were announced]. I got back and my phone had blown up. Susan [Walters, Diane, my wife] said, ‘Congratulations!’ The response has been overwhelming, really nice.”

While Cameron’s warning Diane not to let a drink sit at a bar unattended isn’t on Ashby’s reel, there’s plenty of solid material that is. “A lot of it is from the final day with Faith [Reylynn Caster], Sharon [Sharon Case], and Nick [Joshua Morrow],” Ashby says. “I love Sharon, and I love Josh. Reylynn was very fun to work with. Everyone at Y&R is great [especially] Josh Griffith [head writer/executive producer]. It was really great working with everyone.”

The actor says he’s in solid company as the Guest Performer category includes legendary performer Dick Van Dyke [Timothy, Days of our Lives] and Ashley Jones [Bridget, The Bold and the Beautiful]. “Ashley and I work a lot as directors for the same producer,” Ashby says. “I don’t know her well, but I appreciate her talent as a director and an actress. It’s a tough category. There are a lot of talented people in it.”

Ashby knows talent, and sure, he might sound a little biased when he says his wife was overlooked for a nod for her role as Diane. “A lot of people get impressed by crying,” he suggests. “As my acting teacher once said, ‘If crying is great acting, my Aunt Tilly is Eleonora Duse. Susan should be nominated. She gets my nod and nomination every day.”

Often, it’s more interesting to watch someone try not to break out the waterworks because, Linden Ashby says, “that’s what we do in real life. We do everything we can not to cry.”

There won’t be any crying when Ashby reunites with his Y&R pals at the ceremony in June, with Walters by his side, of course. In fact, not only will Walters be there but so will Ashby. “It’s right at the tail end of this surf trip in Fiji, but I’m going to cut it a day short,” he says. “I’ll hop off the plane and come to the Emmys.”

While Sharon made sure Cameron would never hurt anyone again, Ashby’s not closing the door to future Y&R appearances. “There’s always a twin,” he says. “There’s always a way.”

The 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards airs Friday, June 7 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS/Paramount+.
