'Dancing With the Stars' week 7 shocker: It's a Halloween trick no one saw coming

SPOILER ALERT: This recap of Week 7 of Dancing with the Stars contains spoilers.

Halloween came a day early on Dancing with the Stars, and producers for the ABC ballroom competition played the meanest trick ever. This year’s holiday spooktacular included a blue-haired Carrie Ann (or is it Scary Ann?) and a ton of Halloween puns, as well as the individual dances scored to spooky songs, and two theme-appropriate team dance themes. But even on Halloween — heck, especially on Halloween — somebody has to get the ax. Right?

Still, no one excepted the Grim Reaper’s envelope to contain the names of two eliminated couples. That’s right, the trick was on this week’s “in jeopardy” contestants, Vanessa Lachey and Nikki Bella, as both of them were sent packing. Parting words were not spoken. Tom Bergeron was out of time, and so were these two ladies. Cue the boos — and not due to ghosts!

Ahead of that nightmare, here’s how the dances played out.

Jordan Fisher and Lindsay Arnold: 30/30
Teen Wolf was in the house as Jordan Fisher danced a hairy Paso doblé that Bruno Tonioli said had “the visual impact of Michael Jackson’s Thriller but with all the elements” of the Latin dance style. “It was insanely good,” he said. Len Goodman told the star, “You little devil, you dance like an angel.” Jordan and Lindsay got a major treat: Three ghost-embellished 10s.

Frankie Muniz and Witney Carson: 30/30
Len Goodman isn’t a fan of horror movies, but this creepy contemporary took his breath away. Bruno praised the storytelling and dramatic tension, calling the dance “spine-tinglingly good.” It was the first perfect score for Frankie.

Victoria Arlen and Val Chmerkovskiy: 27/30
There was nothing frightening about this Viennese Waltz to the song “The Night We Met.” Len said the dance was “super” and “natural” (see what he did there?), while Bruno noted that Victoria listened to the judges’ earlier comments about her arm movements.

Lindsey Stirling and Mark Ballas: 27/30
It was a painful Paso doblé for Lindsey Stirling, who is suffering a rib injury. One day after an urgent care visit, the violinist got through her dance but had to sit down for the judges’ critiques. Carrie Ann Inaba said that while she could see the pain in Lindsay’s face, she didn’t see it in her dance movements. “The Paso doble is not a beast, you are the beast,” Carrie Ann said.

Drew Scott and Emma Slater: 27/30
Drew Scott’s animated Charleston with reigning mirrorball champ Emma Slater included a slip-up that the judges thought was part of the choreography. Great save! Carrie Ann said the duo was “so in sync,” and Len admitted that while last week he thought the Property Brother was “dead and buried,” this week he was brought back to life.

Terrell Owens and Cheryl Burke: 25/30
T.O. got his freak on for a firestarter tango to Rick James’ “Super Freak,” and the judges gave his pro partner, Cheryl Burke, extra props for a job well done in the choreography department.

Nikki Bella and Artem Chigvintsev: 24/30
No hocus pocus here. The WWE superstar’s jive to the song “I Put a Spell on You” was set in a coffee shop, but Len thought the brew must have been decaf because the dance needed a bit more “oomph.” Bruno disagreed, saying you don’t find coffee like that at Starbucks, but all the judges scored the dance an 8.

Vanessa Lachey and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 24/30
Mrs. Lachey survived a spooky Paso doblé with Maks, although Len thought the dance was lacking in Paso choreography. But as we’ve already learned, she didn’t survive DWTS’ fright night.

Team Dances
Team Phantom of the Opera — Frankie Muniz, Drew Scott, Vanessa Lachey, Victoria Arlen and their respective partners — blew Team Monster Mash (Jordan Fisher, Lindsay Stirling, Nikki Bella and Terrell Owens) away, earning a perfect score for their perfectly synched routine as the other four pulled corn husks out of their costumes. Carrie Ann said it was the best team dance she’s ever seen on the show.
