From 'Sixth Sense' to 'Sleepaway Camp': Horror's Most Bonkers Twist Endings

Warning: Spoilers abound.

There’s nothing like a shocking twist ending to elevate an already great horror movie to classic status — or, in the specific, possibly superfluous case of the 1983 cult classic Sleepaway Camp, make it live in infamy forever.

So what are the most bonkers endings we’ve ever witnessed in horror films? Yahoo Entertainment’s Kevin Polowy, Marcus Errico, and Matt Whitfield gathered by the fire (OK, there was no fire) to debate the matter, which you can watch in the video above.

There’s the “OG” Psycho, the Alfred Hitchcock thriller that shocked the world in 1960 with its jaw-dropping finale and established the very essence of the slasher film along the way. There’s its ending’s modern-day equivalent, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense (1999) — which, if released in 2017, would have seen its ending ruined on Twitter on opening day.

And there are a few lesser-celebrated titles in between, like the unfathomably dark denouement of The Mist and the Greatest Spelunking Film of All Time, The Descent, which featured alternate endings depending on which side of the Atlantic you lived on.

And of, course, there’s Sleepaway Camp, which ended with its tortured teenage girl revealed to actually be a tortured teenage boy … a twist infamously driven home with the sight of full male genitalia. As Whitfield put it, “Boom, there you go.”
