Damson Idris Covers ESSENCE’s Inaugural ‘Sexiest Men Of The Moment’ Issue

ESSENCE is answering People’s Sexiest Man Alive issue with a more melanated one of their own, as Damson Idris covers the brand’s inaugural Sexiest Men Of The Moment issue.
“The Foundation of a man. He stands 6’1, with deep auburn skin and a 4K pearly smile that glistens like ultraviolet rays off charcoal mines in the deepest sands off the coast of Nigeria. Yes, it’s that deep,” the brand wrote of its cover star on Instagram. “His charm is tangible. His infectiousness is palatable. His future is limitless.
“We let the veil and Snowfall, as the curtain has called Franklin Saint to his highest heights. His recent NAACP Image Award win has cemented the bricks and built the house of a career that, like portraits, is developing in real-time. Make no error that this new era of Damson Idris has a Formula — One that follows the path of Hollywood greats and has us anticipating his upcoming feature film debut.”
When asked why he believes he made the Sexiest Men of the Moment list, Idris replies, “I have no idea! [laughs] But I’m beautiful. I didn’t mean that.”
“Yes you did,” writer Kory Jarvis insisted, leading Idris to add, “If I wasn’t me, I’d be like, Oh, that guy cares. That guy cares about what he’s doing, aside from aesthetics or whatever. I think if you care about what you do, that’s sexy—and that’s inspiring. So, yeah, maybe that’s why I’m sitting here in this chair.”
Elsewhere in the Q&A, the actor discussed his thespian Mt. Rushmore, revealing his top four to be Sidney Poitier, Marlon Brando, Daniel Day-Lewis and Denzel Washington. He also shared a Robert DeNiro quote that’s kept him humble through all of his success, particularly after taking home an NAACP Award for the final season of his FX hit, Snowfall.
“Robert De Niro once said, ‘Just be calm when things are going well. Don’t think you are on top of the world.’ That win definitely has me struggling to do that. For the fans, Franklin and John Singleton, it feels like so many of us won.”
