“Cruel Summer” Season Finale Sneak Peek: Kate & Jeanette Enter the Courtroom

Cruel Summer season 1 is coming to a close, and Teen Vogue has an exclusive clip of the high-stakes courtroom faceoff between Kate Wallis and Jeanette Turner.

All season, fans have theorized about the conclusion to Cruel Summer's first season, which tells its story over 1993, 1994, and 1995. The crucial plot question: Did Jeanette see Kate when she had been kidnapped by her assistant principal Martin Harris? Or did Kate lie, and has thus slandered Jeanette's name?

At this point in the season, the trial is officially ready to begin — Jeanette is suing Kate to the tune of $11 million for dragging her name through the mud on TV. In the sneak peek, both lawyers give their opening statements, with Kate's arguing that the evidence will show nothing. Jeanette's lawyer thinks differently: “The evidence will show that Miss Wallis, on national television, knowingly chose to defame.” And if you've been watching along, it's easy to guess what that evidence might be — Kate's own internet chatroom logs about her kidnapping, which Jeanette's brother stole.

The season finale will hopefully answer many of our lingering questions, including ones about Kate's memory gaps and how much Jeanette actually knows. Start taking notes for your fan theories, the season 1 finale of Cruel Summer airs on Freeform on June 15 at 10 p.m. EST.
