#TimesUp movement continues at the Critics' Choice Awards
The Critics’ Choice Awards continued Hollywood’s support of the recent #TimesUp movement. Host Olivia Munn and many of the winners took time to speak out about gender inequality.
Kumail Nanjiani, who created and co-wrote The Big Sick, said during an acceptance speech for Best Comedy, “I think as men, we have been talking for centuries. It’s time for us to shut up, listen, and amplify.”
Throughout the evening, Munn cracked jokes about gender inequality in the film industry. She even called out the men at the Golden Globes for not being vocal supporters of the #TimesUp movement.
When Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot was honored with the second annual #SeeHer award, she took the opportunity to further the discussion of gender equality. Gadot said, “My promise and commitment to all of you is that I will never be silenced and we will continue to band together to make strides uniting for equality.”
And when the final award for Best Picture was announced, The Shape of Water director Guillermo Del Toro had an announcement for those standing in the way of progress. He said, “For everyone, that has been unequal in working with women … you don’t know what you are missing!”
