Community Centers, Corsets and Clarks: Martine Rose SS24 Is Here
Martine Rose presented her highly-anticipated Spring/Summer 2024 collection at London Fashion Week this season and between the Clarks teasers, Nike collab and community-focused venue, there was a lot to unpack.
An ode to the humble community center and all it encompasses, the showcase took place at St Joseph's Paris Center, a stone's throw from the designer's Crouch Hill studio. Offering a contemporary reimagining of archetypal menswear silhouettes, the co-ed showcase drew from the design of typical workman's garments like high-vis jackets and macs, updated with elongated shoulders and voluminous proportions, pounding down the runway alongside graphic track and tailored jackets.
The menswear offering was furthered through subtle explorations of subcultures. Greasy, wet-look leathers and slicked-back hair took cues from biker culture, while faded blue denim and gaffer-taped detailing continued the collection's masculine DIY aesthetic. Cybercore finds its way into the mix too, as evidenced by colorful cardigans, fuzzy fabrics and a vibrant color palette.
Elsewhere, more feminine styles like crocheted vests, pale pink hues and oversized pearls offered a contrasting approach to the rugged menswear silhouettes. Somewhere along the way, the styles merge, resulting in satin girdles and stockings for men, while oversized jackets, shirts and trousers make up a womenswear uniform.
Footwear takes center stage for SS24, debuting a new colorway of Martine Rose's Nike Shox MR4 collaboration, alongside introducing styles from her first collection for Clarks as a guest designer, dubbed "Coming Up Roses". Finally, the collection was accentuated by accessory collaborations with artist Yaz XL and New York-based designer LL, LLC.
