The actor Colman Domingo is one of the most intentional dressers on any red carpet. No matter the occasion, he chooses his looks with care and purpose.

At the 2024 Met Gala—with the help of his stylists, the duo Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald—the Oscar nominee chose to honor two late Black style icons: actor Chadwick Boseman and Vogue journalist André Leon Talley.

“They both wore capes when they were at the Met,” Colman told E! News on the red carpet. “Everything I do, I feel like it’s gotta be for the culture. It’s gotta be more than just for me.”

Domingo wore a custom Willy Chavarria cream-hued double-breasted suit with a billowing white cape and flowy black trousers. (Befitting the theme, he carried flowers two ways: he pinned a pair of black fabric calla lilies to his lapel, and carried a bouquet of white calla lilies wrapped in black satin in his hand.) The actor’s caped jacket—a silhouette that feels both heroic and languid—recalled Boseman’s beloved Givenchy haute couture ensemble at the 2018 Met, as well as ALT’s signature voluminous garments, which he wore with delightful abandon to the Met and beyond.

The actor offset his elegant suit with shiny David Yurman jewels and an edgy smudge of dark eye shadow around his eyes. After all, there’s lots to celebrate tonight.

“I’ve never met Cardi B and I’m really gagging,” Colman Domingo told E! “I think I might just expire right there at the table.”
