Brooklyn Nets star Ben Simmons, in a stellar Thom Browne look, was our first reminder that the Met Gala red carpet never disappoints. The dress code for this year’s event is The Garden of Time, and Simmons nailed at least half of that prompt with his outrageous accessory: a briefcase clock.

Simmons’s briefcase is an extremely literal interpretation of tonight’s theme, but the Met has never given out awards for nuance. The hard-sided attaché is hollowed out in the center to make way for a simple two-hand clock. Expect to see plenty of time-inspired accessories tonight: Tyla brought an hourglass with her to the carpet.

The briefcase clock isn’t the only time-telling device Simmons is wearing, either. On his wrist is a Patek Philippe Aquanaut with a gem-set rainbow bezel. I’ll count that as another play on the Garden of Time—rainbows are also a natural wonder!

The rest of Simmons’s Thom Browne ensemble covers the “garden” piece of the theme. The overcoat, with a tartan pattern seemingly spilled over the shoulders, also features a vine sprouting from the bottom hem with a flower blooming at the top. In a night that will undoubtedly be filled with outrageous Mad Hatter-inspired looks, Ben Simmons gave us our first taste of what the Met is all about.
