Clovis North High School rocks on with “School of Rock”

It’s music that may sound familiar if you’ve seen the 2003 Jack Black film “School of Rock” or the Broadway musical that followed.

And you can see it live on stage in a local school production of this popular show.

Alexa Rockwell and Elizabeth Fourchy are actors in this Clovis North High School production. In this show, like in the film, students play instruments live on stage.

“For me, it’s my first big performing role, because typically I stay backstage and do crew stuff,” says Fourchy.

“I also do backstage stuff, but I started out doing musicals. I did my first musical here when I was 10,” Rockwell says.

And according to the director, for some, it was the first time they picked up an instrument.

“It’s incredibly unique.  It’s probably the only high school show you’ll see where the kids are playing on stage, as opposed to tracks or a live orchestra.  The kids are doing it themselves. It’s awesome,” says Clovis North High School drama teacher Matthew Bridges.

The story is about a down-and-out musician who poses as a substitute teacher and exposes his students to rock and roll music.

Student actor Ella Lev portrays the uptight principal who keeps everyone in check.  She says students have been rehearsing for weeks, especially the musicians.

“They learned so fast, it’s impressive. It’s really fun to watch, too,” Lev says.

There’s still time to see this Bronco’s Drama student-run production Saturday.  They’re hoping for a sell-out of this final weekend.
