Real estate is a big deal in Los Angeles and the quest for acreage in a coveted neighborhood is always a hotly contested battle when a property goes up for sale. Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger wanted to plant roots in the Brentwood neighborhood near her mother Maria Shriver’s home, but the move they recently made isn’t winning them any fans.

The couple bought a $12.5 million property that was designed in the very Californian midcentury modern style. The estate was a part of Los Angeles architectural history because it was designed by noted architect Craig Ellwood and dubbed the Zimmerman House as a tribute to the original owners, Martin and Eva Zimmerman, who commissioned the home in 1949, according to US Modernist. Architectural fans got excited about the idea of Pratt and Schwarzenegger restoring the estate to its former glory, but according to Robb Report, they went in an entirely different direction.

The duo decided to raze the entire home which sent shockwaves to the neighborhood. The Eichler Network described the demolition as a “gut punch” as they showed a snapshot of the dirt and pile of trees that were strewn about as the construction crew prepared to build an entirely new home. The only remnants left are photographs from the Zimmerman House’s appearance in Progressive Architecture magazine, which showed off the gorgeous gardens created by modernist landscape architect Garrett Eckbo, floor-to-ceiling windows, and the open-floor concept.

Pratt and Schwarzenegger made the off-market deal after the final owner of the estate, Hilda Rolfe, passed away. Now, the Guardians of the Galaxy star and his wife are building their dream home which will be much bigger than the previous structure. Per permit records obtained by Robb Report, their property will house a 15,000-square-foot, two-story modern farmhouse-style residence with a swimming pool and cabana in the backyard. It also sits across the street from Shriver’s compound, and they will also count Sofia Richie and Arianna Huffington as their neighbors.

TikTok account @vinatageonq shared gorgeous video clips of the home from a 2022 estate sale where she raved about the property and criticized Pratt. “Chris Pratt, you’re a weirdo for this one,” she said at the start of her post and ended with a reference to his ex-wife. “We love you, Anna Faris.” The comments below her clip weren’t much better with one user noting, “Chris Pratt just continuing his villain arch.” Another chimed in, “They couldn’t build their SHEIN McMansion somewhere else?” This move isn’t winning Pratt and Schwarzenegger any fans because LA just lost another part of architectural history.
