Chris Pine had the best support by his side at the premiere of Poolman.

The actor and filmmaker, 43, was joined by dad Robert Pine and mom Gwynne Gilford — both of whom are also actors — in Los Angeles on Wednesday, April 24, to support their son's feature-film directorial debut. Chris also stars in and co-wrote the upcoming comedy.

Speaking with PEOPLE during the premiere, Robert, 82, recalls Chris realizing he wanted to be an actor, even thought he "never mentioned" it while growing up.

"He graduated from high school. He did one act for his English class of Waiting for Godot. He was very good in it," Robert says. "Then he went to Berkeley as an English major, and he wanted to meet people. And somebody said, 'Why don't you come and try out for this play?' So we did."

"My wife and I went up to see it, and within five minutes we're going, 'Holy, he's really good,' " Robert adds. "And then he did about four or five plays up there, all wonderful. And then he said afterward, 'I think maybe I'd like to try this.' I said, 'Go for it.' "

Chris tells PEOPLE at the premiere that, as a child of two actors, he "grew up at a dinner table where people talked about guest spots and what an audition went like, and what the casting director said."

As for what inspired him to get behind the camera for Poolman, "I think I just got to a point in my career where I was bored and frustrated, and I've been doing a lot of the similar things and this really made me happy," explains the Into the Woods star.

"I just wanted to pursue what made me happy, and this is what came out," Pine says.

Robert told PEOPLE on Wednesday that he envies his son's ability to "memorize dialogue" as, in contrast, the CHiPs star says it "takes me a long time to do it."

"[Chris] can go off script and get right back on it when he feels something that's good or right. ... I can't do that. And, of course, I'd like to ad-lib the whole thing, but ... " he adds, laughing.

Robert, who has also starred in series including The Bold and the Beautiful and All My Children, makes a surprise cameo in his son's new film.

"My voice does. So you're going to have to watch it and see where my voice comes up," he says.

Poolman hits theaters May 10.
