Chris Pine Recalls Smoking Pot and Stealing Stop Signs Around L.A. at 17: 'I Had a Whole Thing'

Chris Pine is recalling how he spent his time in Los Angeles as a teenager.

Pine, 43, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday, May 9, to promote his new movie Poolman. During the appearance, host Jimmy Kimmel asked Pine how he would spend his time in his native city as a teenager.

"I was smoking pot on Mulholland [Drive]," Pine responded. "Yeah, 17 would have been Sublime, Nirvana definitely still in that phase, that was hip hop - a lot of Wu-Tang, a lot of Tribe," he added, as he and Kimmel, 56, discussed music that would have played on the radio when Pine was a teenager and the late-night host started his career as a Los Angeles-area radio DJ.

"I'd say Mulholland for pot. I was never a good pot smoker but I really wanted to be," Pine said. He then recalled with a laugh that he would also go to Universal CityWalk in Universal City to smoke pot as well.

"Driving around, trying to steal stop signs. I got one - why is that such a big deal for a kid?" he added, while reflecting on his youth. "I had a whole thing, I wanted to get a stop sign and put it up in my room."

Pine, the son of actors Robert Pine and Gwynne Gilford, shared with PEOPLE at Poolman's premiere on April 25 that he feels the movie "is really my tribute to that part of Los Angeles" that he grew up in. The Star Trek star wrote, starred in and directed the movie himself; the film revolves around his character Darren Barrenman, a pool attendee, who grows sucked in to a criminal conspiracy.

Annette Bening, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Stephen Tobolowsky, Clancy Brown, John Ortiz and Ray Wise also appear in the movie.

Pine explained on the talk show that the movie is inspired by his impressions of his home city.

"They say write about what you know, so I wrote about L.A. and I included a lot of stuff in there that like, like restaurants that I like and buildings that are either still around or aren't and I wish were still around and stuff that careens around in my brain," Pine said.

The actor and first-time filmmaker addressed how he's handled some negative reviews for Poolman during the May 9 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “It’s ultimately been the best thing that’s ever happened to me," he said of the film. "It’s forced me to double down on joy and really double down on what I love most about my job — which you kind of forget, it’s fundamentally about play.”

Poolman is in theaters now.
