Chris Hemsworth continues to show his support for superhero movies. While legendary directors including Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Quentin Tarantino have offered their critiques over the superhero genre, the MCU’s Thor has spoken against them.

Chris Hemsworth says superhero movie criticism is ‘harsh’

Men in Black: International star Chris Hemsworth thinks that superhero movies deserve more credit than they are given. While multiple big-name directors of the industry have criticized the genre, Hemsworth, who was disappointed with Thor: Love and Thunder, feels their statements were “harsh.”

Speaking with The UK Times, Hemsworth said, “It felt harsh, and it bothers me, especially from [my] heroes. It was an eye-roll for me, people bashing the superhero space.” He continued, “Those guys had films that didn’t work too, we all have. When they talked about what was wrong with superheroes, I thought, cool. Tell that to the billions who watch them. Were they all wrong? “

Speaking on the matter of superhero movies taking the space of indie films across the cinematic landscape, Hemsworth stated that “cinema-going did not change because of superheroes”. He confirmed that it was “because of smartphones and social media.”

He said that while the theatrical dynamic was changing, it was the superhero genre that actually brought people to the big screens and continues to do so. The actor concluded by saying that comic book movies “deserve a little more appreciation.”

Chris Hemsworth is set to star in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, where he plays Dr. Dementus, the antagonist of the film. Later in 2024, he will also be voicing a younger version of Optimus Prime named Orion Pax in Transformers One.

While his future as Thor isn’t confirmed yet, he is expected to be back in four more MCU projects. Those include a Thor installment, What If…? Season 3, Avengers 5, and Avengers: Secret Wars.
