Thor: Love and Thunder got a mixed reception from fans. The MCU sequel extended the wacky and comedic tone of Thor: Ragnarok further. However, in a recent interview, actor Chris Hemsworth expressed some regret over this direction for the movie and talked about where he feels the project went wrong.

Chris Hemsworth says he ‘didn’t stick the landing’ with Thor: Love and Thunder

Following Thor’s character growth in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder took the character’s journey in an unexpected direction.

In an interview with Vanity Fair’s Karen Valby, Chris Hemsworth talked about what did not work for his fourth solo outing as the God of Thunder. He expressed his regrets about focussing more on comedy in the sequel. He explained:

“I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing.”

Earlier in the interview, Hemsworth described why he grew frustrated with playing Thor. He stated that the other Avengers had better character arcs, while he as Thor only “felt like a security guard for the team.”

Then, Thor: Ragnarok tweaked the character. It allowed Chris Hemsworth to use his natural comedic gifts for the part.

But following Thor’s three-movie arc in Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Endgame, the character went almost entirely comedic in Love and Thunder. Combining this with the more serious story arcs of Jane Foster and Gorr the God Butcher produced mixed results for fans of Thor’s previous MCU appearances.

Thor: Love and Thunder’s critical and commercial reception wasn’t as great as Chris Hemsworth’s previous three MCU movies. After the release of the film, Hemsworth spoke to Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused Podcast and said that he thinks that Thor needs a drastic tonal shift moving forward.
