Chris Cuomo on McConnell's SCOTUS comment: 'All things wrong with politics'

On Cuomo Prime Time Tuesday night, Chris Cuomo offered up some harsh criticism for Mitch McConnell, this coming after the Senate majority leader pulled a 180 on Supreme Court nominations.

In 2016, McConnell famously blocked the Senate from even voting on Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, citing historical precedent as the reason.

Speaking with Fox News’s Chris Wallace in March 2016, McConnell said, “All we’re doing, Chris, is following a longstanding tradition of not filling vacancies on the Supreme Court in the middle of a presidential year.”

But at a speaking engagement in Kentucky on Tuesday, McConnell made it clear that the longstanding tradition that was so important just a few years ago is no longer so meaningful. When asked what he’d do if a Supreme Court justice died next year, McConnell replied, “Oh, we’d fill it.” He went on to speak about how appointing judges is more important than legislation because it’s a lifetime appointment that can’t be changed.

Cuomo responded by saying, “Oh, the hypocrisy. Shame on McConnell. Poster child for perfidy. All things wrong with politics.”

But Cuomo’s point wasn’t just to bash McConnell; it was to highlight the importance of voting and the power in doing so.

“If you were to look at this and say, ‘I never want to see one of these guys do this again. I hate this,’ if you feel like that and you’re in Kentucky,” Cuomo said, “there will never be another Mitch McConnell moment like this if he gets voted out.”

Cuomo Prime Time airs weeknights at 9 p.m. on CNN.
