Whether you know it or not, Fixer Upper’s Chip and Joanna Gaines are your relationship goals. The married HGTV stars - college sweethearts and parents to four children - are the ones who remind you that love is alive somewhere in a sunny corner of Waco, Texas. Even if everything else is terrible and sad, you can come home to snuggle with Chip and Jo and watch them use shiplap to make it all better.

The couple has had a busy few years since Fixer Upper debuted in 2013. They’ve launched Magnolia Market at the Silos, a furniture line, a magazine, and a bed and breakfast - and now they’re on the cover of People magazine.

In the interview, the Gaineses revealed that while they don’t take their success and fame for granted, it’s not their biggest priority. "We are thankful for our success," Chip told People. "But if it ever compromised our ability to be a healthy married couple or our kids started to get a little bit off track, we would quit this thing in a heartbeat."

Maybe they can stay grounded because of their humble start as cash-strapped entrepreneurs trying to launch a business. "I remember when we first got married the only money we had was what was in Chip’s pocket," Joanna said. "He always had a wad of cash, but we were broke. If I needed to go grocery shopping it’s whatever was in his pocket. That’s how we paid the bills."

"Her dad spent the first two years of our marriage asking me if I was going to get a job," Chip said. "I was like, ’I have a job. I really like my job. I flip houses, I’ve got some rental properties, I do some construction. That’s a job. It’s a full-time deal.’"

When they first became aware of their celebrity, the Gaineses were taken aback, Chip said. They had to ask themselves, "Is this the life we want to lead? Is this who we want to be?"

But they’ve embraced it and continue to make their business empire grow. "I think Jo and I like to roll the dice, honestly," Chip said. "The cooler things get from our perspective, the more we like to invest. We’re building - hopefully - big, relevant, long-term, sustainable ideas and businesses and concepts and partnerships. It never feels really like you’re OK. You look around and you’re like, ’OK, I got this farm, I got these gorgeous four babies, but wow, do we really need to buy this?’ ... We always push each other like that."
