Cher Accepts Icon Award While Wearing Pants From ‘40 Years’ Ago

Cher accepted the much-deserved Icon award last night at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards held in Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre. And it was longtime friend Meryl Streep who presented the bona fide pop legend with the trophy.
While onstage, Cher marked the milestone with a touching speech about not giving up on your dreams—and about maintaining a sustainable wardrobe. She was dressed in a black long-sleeve corset top encrusted with white crystals all over from Dolce & Gabbana, plus her favorite black Chrome Hearts pants with silver zippers and studs. She finished the rocker ensemble with black heels and layered diamond jewelry from Jacob & Co.
“There are people who say, ‘Doesn’t that b-tch have more than one pair of pants?’” she said, laughing. “I’ve had these pants for 40 years. I thought we should come here and accept this award together.”
Speaking to her decades in the music industry, Cher said she feels “lucky to have people that have stayed with me all these years,” while noting that “most of you weren’t born” when her career began as part of Sonny & Cher—her pop duo with then-husband Sonny Bono—in the ‘60s.
“I don’t usually talk about it, but I have been down and out so many times you could not believe it,” Cher continued. “Dropped by record companies, couldn’t get a job… they said, ‘Oh, she’s so over.’ But I never gave up my dream.”
Then, in celebration, Cher belted out her grand hit “Believe,” accompanied by fellow Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson. Prior to their duet, Hudson also gave a powerful performance of Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time.”
Cher’s boyfriend, Alexander Edwards, posed with her on the red carpet and supported her at the ceremony. The pop legend also posed for photos with Beyoncé, who wore a black Cowboy Carter ensemble; and Streep, who was lovely in a white dress.
