Charli XCX Recalls Feeling 'Super Jealous' of Lorde's Early Success and Thinking 'That Could Have Been Me'

The pop star also opened up about her thoughts on motherhood in a cover story with 'Rolling Stone UK'

Charli XCX had some feelings about Lorde getting "famous."

In a cover story with Rolling Stone UK, the "Good Ones" artist, 31, opened up about professional jealousy in the pop star world.

Ultimately, Charli said there was a time when she was "jealous" of the "Green Light" singer, 27.

“When ‘Royals’ came out, I was super jealous of the success that that song got, and that Ella got," she told the outlet. "You piece all this stuff together in your brain, like: ‘She was into my music. She had big hair; I had big hair. She wore black lipstick; I once wore black lipstick.’ You create these parallels and think, ‘Well, that could have been me.’"

Charli continued: "But it couldn’t have because we’re completely different people. I wasn’t making music that sounded anything like 'Royals.' I think you just read what you want into it because you’re feeling insecure about your own work.”

Eventually, the envy passed and the pair "are on good terms."

“You get over it and then you try to figure out all the things that are unique about you and you pursue that, and then probably in five months’ time you have a breakdown about something else,” she said.

Elsewhere in the interview, Charli opened up about her conflicting thoughts about motherhood.

There's a part of her that doesn't "want to conform to centuries of indoctrination.”

However, that hasn't stopped her from contemplating the societal pressure that will come with it.

“Am I less of a woman if I don’t have a kid? Will I feel like I’ve missed out on my purpose in life? I know we’re not supposed to say that, but it’s this biological and social programming," Charli said.

She continued: "There’s a lot of pressure on women to not talk about that stuff super openly, especially not in pop music or in music generally; we’re supposed to be sexy and free and fun and wild.”

It's something Charli contemplated on her forthcoming album, Brat, on the track "I think about it all the time."

The pop star's new album Brat is due out on June 7.
