It's been eight months since single Buddy "The Cake Boss" Valastro suffered a hand injury after a freak accident while bowling at home. He's been sharing his road to recovery ever since and recently appeared on the Rachael Ray Show to give an update following his fifth surgery.

"I'm feeling good, my hand is coming along," he told Rachael: "I had my fifth surgery about a month ago and it was a huge success because now I definitely have a lot more of my mobility back. I can make a whole fist, I can make all my fingers straight."

Back in September, the expert baker shared a photo on his Instagram account with a cast on his dominant right hand. At the time, a representative for Buddy explained to PEOPLE how the injury occurred. While bowling at his home with his family, Buddy was "trying to release the bowling pin from the cage mechanism" when his right hand became "lodged and compressed inside the unit."

The injury led to a hospital stay and several surgeries, but Buddy explained to Rachael that at this point he has about 75 percent of his mobility back. He is still going to physical therapy and has adjusted some of his cake decorating processes to be simpler.

In the clip from Rachael's show, he demonstrated a simple piping technique that makes a wavy icing design and a finished product that looks like a bed of flowers on top of a cake, which Buddy pointed out is perfect for Mother's Day.
