Bryce Dallas Howard Is a Little Bummed She Doesn't Get to Sing in 'Pete's Dragon'

Coming off of the T.Rex sized-success of this summer’s biggest blockbuster, Jurassic World, Bryce Dallas Howard had plenty to sing about. But bursting out in song was verboten on the set of her follow-up movie, the upcoming remake of Disney’s 1977 favorite, Pete’s Dragon. That’ll be surprising for viewers who grew up on the original, a lavish musical that mixes live action and animation. But the new version, directed by David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints), is spoken word all the way. “I was all set to sing!” Howard tells Yahoo Movies. “This is not a musical, although I tried to work in a few humming moments.”

While the NYU-trained actress was initially disappointed that the role wouldn’t require her singing voice, she admits to feeling relief that she didn’t have to worry about living up to peoples’ memories of the earlier film. “It wasn’t like, ‘I feel like I’m going to be playing the same character…and it needs to be a certain way.’ That wasn’t a dynamic that existed when we were shooting.” Maybe she can still find a way to work a musical number into the upcoming Jurassic World sequel.
