Brooke Shields Says It 'Felt Good to Feel Smaller Than Another' When with Andre Agassi: 'He Was So Famous'

The actress reflected on her past relationship with the former world-star tennis player, who she was married to from 1997 to 1999

Brooke Shields is opening up about how it felt to be with Andre Agassi.

Speaking in the April/May 2024 issue of AARP The Magazine, the actress, 58, reflected on her past relationship with the former world star tennis player, who she was married to from 1997 to 1999.

“With Andre, it also felt good to feel smaller than another, because he was so famous and number 1 in the world,” Shields told the outlet.

“Everywhere we went, he had tons of bodyguards,” she added. “I could sit back because it wasn’t my world. He was the first one out of the car when we arrived at events.”

Meanwhile, Shields credits her ex-husband for helping her separate from her late mother, Teri, as a manager.

“It was a transition that I needed. I wasn’t strong enough to separate from my mother Teri on my own,” the star told AARP The Magazine. “I kept falling back in.”

In an interview with PEOPLE, Shields previously said that, "to this day," her therapist tells her, "I will always be thankful to Andre because he helped you separate from your mother lovingly."

Looking back she told PEOPLE, "We understood each other's trajectory with regards to being famous — or infamous — at such a young age."

Shields has since been married to screenwriter and producer Chris Henchy. The pair tied the knot in 2001 and share daughters Rowan Francis, 20, and Grier Hammond, 17.

“He makes me laugh,” Shields told AARP of Henchy. “I think I always knew that I needed solid and normal. And he’s a very, very good dad. He goes to every basketball game, every volleyball game. And the kids love being around him too.”

Speaking of her children, she continued, “They’re very old-souled children,” adding, “Personality-wise, Rowan’s like a golden retriever puppy and Grier is like an Abyssinian cat.”

Shields' new film Mother of the Bride is on Netflix May 9.
