How 'Super Troopers 2' landed Rob Lowe — and got him to film that outrageous scene

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Like 2001’s Super Troopers, the hit new sequel, Super Troopers 2, includes some inspired cameos and bit parts, including ones by Rob Lowe, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Seann William Scott, Damon Wayans Jr., and, reprising their roles from the first film, Brian Cox, Lynda Carter, and Jim Gaffigan.

Broken Lizard, the writing and acting team behind the stoner-cop comedies, explained how Lowe was lured into the fold during a recent stop by Yahoo Studios. Jay Chandrasekhar, Lizard’s resident director who also plays Thorny, has become a prolific television director and worked with Lowe on Fox’s acclaimed but short-lived legal comedy The Grinder.

“We’ve always been big Rob Lowe fans, so I said, ‘Would you ever consider doing a part in Super Troopers 2, and he said, ‘Yes, anything. I’m in. I don’t even need to see the script,'” Chandrasekhar explained.

And when Lowe said anything, he meant it.

The Outsiders and Wayne’s World alum plays Guy LeFranc, an former minor-league hockey legend who’s now the mayor of the small French-Canadian town the troopers have been charged with policing, where he also owns a brothel filled with both female and male prostitutes.

In the hard-R comedy’s most outrageous moments, Lowe tugs on and fake-boxes one of his gigolo’s very, um, substantial, exposed penis.

“We actually took it out of the script because Jay was concerned that a guy of Rob Lowe’s stature would read this scene and be like, ‘I’m not gonna do that,’ and we wouldn’t get him,” said Kevin Heffernan (Farva). “So we took it out of the script. And then we got Rob Lowe, and we hassled Jay for weeks to tell Rob Lowe that that scene was going back in.

“And then finally he did, and Rob Lowe was like, ‘Great. Let’s do it.’ It was shocking how into it he was.”

Super Troopers 2 is meow in theaters.
