Brittany Cartwright Says 'Stubborn' Jax Taylor Won't Go to Couples Therapy: 'It's in His Hands' (Exclusive)

'The Valley' star tells PEOPLE her husband of four years has "things that he needs to work on" following their separation

Just ahead of the premiere of The Valley last month, stars Brittany Cartwright and Jax Taylor announced their separation following four years of marriage.

“The space is needed, big time,” Cartwright, 35, tells PEOPLE. “But I am enjoying my space, for sure.”

During their separation, Cartwright has been staying at various Airbnbs while Taylor, 44, remains in their family home with son Cruz, who turns 3 later this month. Cartwright shares that she and Taylor haven’t tried couples therapy yet, despite her suggestion.

“Jax is extremely stubborn,” she says. “I don't know if we'll ever actually get that far. He's got things that he needs to work on. I'm not saying I'm perfect, but there's a lot.”

Cartwright reveals that she left after she “hit my breaking point one morning” following “a couple fights that were really big.”

“It was almost like a veil was lifted,” the former SUR server says. “I noticed everything that had been wrong in our relationship, and I just kind of woke up. I just couldn't take it anymore. We were fighting so bad, I just started packing up a suitcase and I was like, ‘Me and Cruz are getting out of this house.’ I had to do what was right for me and for my son.”

The duo has been co-parenting Cruz and continues to co-host their podcast When Reality Hits with Jax and Brittany.

“It's a job for us,” Cartwright explains. “We’ve got to make money for our future, for our son, for his future. That's what really matters. We're going to be in each other's lives no matter what, whether we get back together or we don't, so I'd rather us be able to be around each other than absolutely hate each other. Let's just pray it doesn't get that far.”

The Kentucky native doesn’t know exactly what the future holds for her and Taylor, but she believes “it's in his hands.”

“I go back and forth,” Cartwright says. “Some days I'm like, ‘For Cruz, we could make it work.’ But then I'm also like, ‘If I go back, it's just going to be the same things, and I deserve better.’ I still love Jax very much, but he is a hard person to deal with, and I think everybody in the world knows that."

As Cartwright continues enjoying her space from Taylor, she’s been leaning on her friends and family, including her The Valley costars Kristen Doute and Michelle Saniei Lally, who recently divorced her husband Jesse Lally.

“Every single person on the cast has been there for me,” Cartwright says. “It's really hard to talk to my family about it, because I don't want them to think that I'm failing. That's been a really big issue for me. But I think everybody understands what's going on.”

The Vanderpump Rules alum thinks Michelle, 36, seems “a lot happier” since her divorce and says the two have been able to lean on each other.

“She's so happy and I'm so happy for her,” Cartwright says. “We've had each other's back so much because we're going through a lot of the same things, and it's been good to have somebody to talk to about everything.”

Cartwright has also tried to stay busy while navigating her separation. “I'm still doing my podcast and working on all these different things,” she says. “I really want to get into some kind of hosting-type thing. I love the parties and I love cooking and all that stuff. So, the wheels are turning.”
