Netflix has confirmed that Jonathan Bailey is officially a cast member on the next season of Heartstopper, putting an end to weeks of rumors.

Last month, a mysterious Instagram account appeared under the name of Jack Maddox, leading eagle-eyed Heartstopper fans to deduce that Bailey would be playing the character, who appeared in a 2021 one-off comic. Alice Oseman, creator and writer of Heartstopper, confirmed Bailey’s role in a press release from the streamer, calling Maddox “an Instagram-famous classicist and celebrity crush of Charlie.”

Netflix also announced additional cast members for the beloved graphic novel adaptation on Thursday morning. Eddie Marsan (Back to Black) and Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger) will also appear in season three, per the press release. Oseman shared that Atwell will be portraying main character Nick Nelson’s Aunt Diane, “who takes Nick on a summer holiday to Menorca and has some tough advice to impart about his relationship.” Marsan, meanwhile, will play Geoff, the “wise and straight-talking therapist” of the other protagonist, Charlie Spring.

“I am incredibly excited to be welcoming three new cast members to the Heartstopper family,” Oseman said in the press release. “It was an absolute joy to see Hayley, Eddie, and Jonathan’s talent alongside our existing cast, and I can’t wait for the Heartstopper fans to meet these new characters.”

Netflix also dropped a short clip of Bailey as Maddox, showing him looking sharp in a greige suit and setting up what looks to be a book signing table.

The Netflix show’s resident bookworm has excellent taste.

Netflix also teased the storyline of the third season, after the second season left off on an uncertain note, with Charlie’s thumb hovering over a DM to Nick that says, “I love you.” Per Netflix’s synopsis, season three will pick right back up on that cliffhanger, hinting that Nick “also has something important to say to Charlie.” The synopsis keeps the rest of the plot pretty vague, only saying that the friend group begins “to realize that the school year will come with both its joys and its challenges.”

“As they learn more about each other and their relationships, plan social events and parties and start thinking about university choices, everyone must learn to lean on those they love when life doesn’t go to plan,” the synopsis reads.

On one hand, we’re thankful for no spoilers. On the other hand, if anything happens to Tao and Elle after they’ve finally gotten together after two seasons of “will they won’t they,” we will riot. We’ll find out in October 2024, when Heartstopper season three hits Netflix, just in time for cozy fall viewing.
