Bride sparks controversy after rejecting wedding guests’ ‘refund’ request: ‘You shouldn’t have to pay’

A couple is refusing to refund a guest who can’t make it to the ceremony.

The bride went on Reddit’s “Wedding” forum to share her story. When three people told her they couldn’t make it to the wedding a week before, she didn’t think it was fair to refund them for meals and accommodation. The bride and groom have to pay for the items regardless if the guests attend.

“So our wedding is less than a week away,” she wrote. “We’ve had a situation where (I’m trying to not give details in case anyone involved sees this) 3 people of my to be husbands closest family cannot make our wedding after booking and paying to stay in the venue with breakfast.”

“It’s a block cost so everyone paid the same amounts for their rooms and all rooms were full in the venue. Now that they’re not coming they’ve asked for a refund for their accommodation and food. We’re saying no but being made to look like inconsiderate AHs.”

“But the problem is that its going to go onto us through no fault of our own either,” she said. “We already gave final numbers so can’t get refund on their meals and drinks for the day. So we’re already inadvertently paying this cost but we accept that.”

“What we don’t accept is refunding the accommodation because no one else can fill that room with this short notice and we already gave them a 50% discount rate. It’s just a cost we can’t afford and I feel shouldn’t have to refund. If it was a month before then fine (we actually had this happen and had no problem refunding) but less than a week? Are we being unreasonable by saying no.”

“I’m assuming they knew it was non refundable of course. You shouldn’t have to pay because they chose to cancel,” a user wrote.

“Seems like their request for refund on the accommodations should be made of the hotel,” another said.

“You gave your head count already. If they would like to contact the hotel and work it out with them, let them have at it,” someone added.
